Comments: A long time ago I found a translation of the Genji Monagatari, and still years later I enjoy reading it. The poetry is enchanting, and her descriptives are well, so very vivid its sheer pleasure to read about the colours and clothing. Your website brings those colours to life and thank you for your work. I am curious though, your backgrounds are inspired by screens but I wonder if the gold coloured ones were more Momoyama period, well, perhaps to my less experienced way of thinking. Still its wonderful work...thank you for your hard work!

Regarding your question about the images with gold clouds in back of the main subject in the Tale of Genji series, I usually reference 'Genji-Monogatari Gajou (Tale of Genji Album)' by Jokei Sumiyoshi. This book contains illustrated images that describe the main story of each chapter. The images are very detailed miniaturist paintings with bright rich colors with gold clouds.

Actually, my style combines western classical techniques together with the Japanese traditional style. I painted the main figure using western classical realism with a glazing technique while I painted the small narrative images in the background using a Japanese traditional school style such as 'Sumiyoshi School'. This school of painting specialized in the 'yamato-e' style, which was originally an offshoot of the Tosa-ha (Tosa School). Tosa-ha started to produce 'Genji-e' in a miniaturist style (seimitsu-ga) in small formats around the middle of the 15th-Century. For your reference, artists in other schools during the Momoyama and Edo periods developed different styles of Genji painting.

This was a very good question and required answering since many non-Japanese viewers may have wondered about it as well.
