He She Me

Graphite on Paper
24"X18" (61cm x 46cm)

"He She Me" explores the nuanced terrain of identity in a world where traditional gender and self-perception boundaries are fluid. This pencil portrait of a young individual questions whether he is simply a boy or if he embodies feelings that transcend conventional labels. Alternatively, it might reflect my own projected emotions and vulnerabilities.

The subject’s serene yet tense expression prompts us to consider identity's fluid nature, existing between societal expectations and personal truth. His features suggest a complexity that resists easy categorization, emphasizing that identity is rarely clear-cut.

This piece illustrates identity as a tapestry of ambiguity and self-discovery. "He She Me" becomes a vessel for examining our projections and reflections on the nature of identity itself.

“Lillie” and “Audra” are works that I done after the portrait sessions. The pieces began as quick studies from a live model session, allowing me to observe and respond to the model’s presence directly. I later photographed the model from multiple angles and continued to draw and started new drawing in the studio using one of the reference photos. Drawing from life gave me an authentic sense of the model’s character and energy, while working from the photo allowed me to develop the finer details at my own pace. This process reflects my approach to portraiture—capturing both the immediacy of presence and the quiet refinement of studio work.
